2nd sock design: Big fat rib!
January 25, 2012 § Leave a comment
Made another pair of really long socks. This time with a sport-weight sock yarn and a stripy chunky rib on top. The rib is striped with double-held fingering sock yarn. Use various leftovers for a contrasting effect.

SOCKS !

I’ve kind of obsessed with making perfectly fitted socks (!)
I always do them toe-up, two-at-a-time on a Magic loop with gusset and a heel flap.
As my sock experience progresses I start to picture my own socks and I have this thing with knee-highs generously topped with a textured band to fold. My first attempt turned out quite successful and in time I will make a pattern for it.
Now I’m trying to make a pair in a sport weight-yarn with a striped top made from leftovers.
Getting ready for the cold …

Winther accessories … As the temperature falls I’m knitting hats, cowls, shawls and socks for myself and Polly – little projects that’s quick to do and nice opportunities to experience with different techniques and yarns :)
First toe-ups on a magic loop

It makes sense to knit socks from the toe-up. You can try them on along as you go, and you can knit until you run out of yarn. Doing them on a magic loop will eliminate the ladders/loose stitches you get from dpn’s and you won’t have a hard time doing number two. I wanted to try all of that :)
I grabbed a ball of Crazy Zuberball from my Stash and went along. In order to control the selfstriping colors I decided to mix it with some brown Arwetta. 4 skeins of yarn was too much for my magic loop – they got really tangled very quickly! so I made one at a time, saving the 2-at-the-same-time practise for later.
From now on I will prefer to knit socks this way. Way easier :)
